Per Capita Income

Per capita income is a country’s total income, or GDP, divided by its population. It is a rough measure of average living standards and allows comparisons between countries of very different sizes.

Why It Matters

India is one of the largest economies in the world but still a lower-middle-income country per person.

In India

India’s GDP is larger than the UK’s, yet with over 20 times as many people, its per capita income is a small fraction of Britain’s.
