GDP

India’s economy grew 7.8% in April–June 2026, faster than any other large economy, during a war that sent oil above $100. Gross Domestic Product is the total value of everything a country produces in a given period: every product sold, every service rendered, every rupee of construction and software exports, added into one number.

Why It Matters

GDP growth is the scoreboard every other economic number is trying to explain.

A growing GDP usually means more jobs, more business investment and more tax revenue. Two consecutive quarters of shrinking GDP is the common definition of a recession. Economists watch the growth rate far more closely than the size of GDP itself, and they distinguish real growth, after removing inflation, from nominal growth at today’s prices.

In India
6.9%→6.9%Apr–Jun 2025 → Apr–Jun 2026, real growth

Services grew about 10% and industry 8.6%, while farming grew only 2.9% as the monsoon weakened. The figure uses India’s new GDP series with a 2022-23 base year, which also revised the year-earlier quarter down to 6.9%.
