Reserve Currency

A reserve currency is one that central banks hold as part of their foreign exchange reserves and that is widely used for international trade and finance. The US dollar is the dominant reserve currency, followed by the euro.

Why It Matters

The dollar’s status is why US interest rates affect the whole world.

In India

Most of India’s oil imports are priced and paid for in dollars, even when the oil comes from countries other than the US.
