Household Consumption Survey
The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey, run by MoSPI, asks a large sample of households what they spend on food, rent, transport, education and other items. Its results are used to set CPI weights and to measure poverty and living standards.
Why It Matters
It is the source behind the basket that defines Indian inflation.
In India
The 2023-24 survey found Indian households spending a smaller share of their budgets on food than a decade earlier, and more on services.
