GST Council

The GST Council is chaired by the Union Finance Minister and includes finance ministers from every state. It decides GST rates, exemptions and rules. The Centre has one-third of the voting weight and the states two-thirds.

Why It Matters

It is one of the few places where the Centre and every state must agree on economic policy.

In India

At its September 2025 meeting, the Council agreed to collapse GST’s four main slabs into two.
