Currency Swap
In a currency swap, two parties exchange amounts of different currencies and agree to reverse the exchange at a future date at a set rate. Central banks use swaps to add or drain liquidity and manage pressure on their currency without permanently spending reserves.
Why It Matters
A swap spreads the cost of defending a currency over time.
In India
In December 2025 the RBI ran a $5 billion buy/sell swap, and in October 2026 it used sell/buy swaps to support the rupee.
